2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup Nominations – Doomben

May 16th, 2011

The 2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup will jump at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday May 21st with an unexpectedly small list of entries.

Just 10 have been nominated for the event and that number could well drop further when final acceptances are made later in the week.

Despite that it still could be a very interesting Group 3 contest with a few horses needing to prove themselves here to have any hope of moving up to bigger events later in the carnival.

The stakes for Vision And Power are probably even higher, a poor run in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and his career could well be in jeopardy.

Trainer Jo Pride has persevered with the horse but if he were to flop in a small race like this any thoughts of a final Group 1 win could go out the window.

Having said that a big run could see the old campaigner well and truly back into Group 1 territory.

Other notable names in the Lord Mayor’s Cup nominations Firebolt, a New Zealand horse which had his first up run in Brisbane on the weekend but couldn’t find the line as a well backed favourite.

He’ll need to find something special in less than a week if he’s any chance here.

Tagus will run for John P Thompson and has big wraps coming through the lower grades.

A field of this size could be just what he needs to stamp his authority at Group level.

Others of note include Our Lucas for Robert Heathcote and Snow Alert for Chris Waller.
