The 2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup may be one of the smallest fields at Doomben Racecourse on Saturday but it’s not exactly the easiest to find a winner with skewed form guides across the board.
There’s three horses in the field which have recently come across from New Zealand so getting an accurate comparison can be difficult at the best of times.
Making the task even more difficult is the fact not one of these horses can boast consistency as being one of their strong points throughout their careers.
For that reason the 2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup tips rely on a little bit of faith and are based on what the horse can do when it’s at its best.

2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup Tips
1st – Firebolt
He was the favourite last week at Doomben but failed dismally and as a result he lost his spot in the Doomben Cup field. He drops down in grade to tackle the Lord Mayor’s Cup and the simple fact is while he could certainly win, he could also run last. This has to be one of the least consistent horses to ever be produced but when at his best he’ll leave this field for dead. That’s what we’re relying on, the same form that saw him win at Te Rapa two starts back over a good field including The Hombre. This isn’t a horse you can bet with absolute confidence but you’ll get more value than you did last weekend and he’s a much better chance in this one.

2nd – Danagaze
Good quality gelding that’s been offering a lot for a while but is due to really step up at group level. Overall career stats are good with five form 12 but he went off the boil a bit at the end of 2010. Since returning in 2011 he claimed a win first up at Doomben and then ran third last start on the Gold Coast. That was on a slow track though, a surface he’s not comfortable on but he still came from 10th at the top of the straight. On a good surface he’s four form six and at Doomben this horse is three from four. He’s a big chance and will be hitting the line hard from barrier three.

3rd – St Germaine
One of those New Zealand horses with decent form at home but you question the grade when making the trip across. Still, form barrier one this horse will be positioned perfectly and be given a great ride by Jonathon Riddell. She’s the only mare in the field so that gives her a 2kg advantage and she’s coming off a win last start and a second first up in 2011. Punters aren’t sure either way about this horse so there’s a little bit of interest but unlikely to be a big push at any stage. She offers decent value considering she has the best recent results in the field and she’ll be good enough to run a place at Doomben tomorrow.
