It was the kiwi’s that dominated the 2011 Lord Mayor’s Cup at Doomben with Firebolt returning to form to blitz the field.
In his traditional style he went to the front from the outset and he quickly set up a big lead over his rivals.
Connections were leaving nothing to chance after his last start flop and decided to play a game of catch me if you can with a multiple length lead built up by the time they entered the straight.
Given the pace that had been set the backmarkers had every chance to make some in roads but Firebolt had run them off their feet with his win never looking in doubt over the final 200m.
The only horse which made any real impression was fellow kiwi St Germaine which took a rails run the entire journey and managed to almost get within a length by the time they hit the line.
Tagus was third past the post almost two lengths back from the winner and he held off a very late move from Snow Alert in fourth.
It was a much needed win for Firebolt which lost his chance in the Doomben Cup after the poor run the start previous and it means his Brisbane Carnival may not be over yet.
St Germaine also impressed and indicated some extra distance would be dealt with no problem at all.
