Solzhenitsyn Takes 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup

May 19th, 2012

Robert Heathcote-trained gelding Solzhenitsyn has produced an excellent effort in his first Group level test to take top honours in the Group 3 2012 Lord Mayor’s Cup.

The Brisbane-based five-year-old shot to the lead early and was able to stay there for the entire race, showing excellent strength at the back end to maintain his speed and win by 1.5 lengths.

Trainer Heathcote was thrilled with the son of St Peterburg’s ability to step up in class against a host of quality horses.

“I’ve always like him and I’ve always known there was a good race in him,” Heathcote said.

“Taking that step from restricted grade up to this level and he’s done it in style and let me say what a lovely ride from Michael.”

The win takes Solhenitsyn’s record to eight wins from 20 starts and he has now collected almost $200,000 in prize money.

Chris Waller-trained Firebolt finished strongly to run second while experienced gelding Ginga Dude came third.

The Brisbane Winter Carnival is now well and truly under way so head to to back a winner!

Home of the $300 bonus bet the Australian owned bookie has the best odds on all the winter action.
