A less-than capacity field of 13 runners have been nominated for an appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1615m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse, highlighted by several notable competitors over 2014 racing events so far.
Unlucky to be blocked for a run and finish eighth in the featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) last weekend, Angel Of Mercy has been included in nominations for the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup.
Claiming five wins and four places from 25 competitive starts to date, Angel Of Mercy was a standout performer over just three 2013 spring appearances; finishing second in the Konica Minolta 3.y.o+ (1300m) first-up and winning the Listed Northam Cup (1600m) most notably on October 27th.
Returning to the track in similarly competitive form this season, the Hussonet mare finishing fourth in the Listed Bunbury Stakes (1400m) first-up, producing a strong turn of foot to run on for third amongst classy company in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Winning Edge Members Quality (1600m) on April 19th.
While unable to figure in contention in either of her two most recent appearances, trainer Gerald Ryan is confident a step down in class is precisely what is needed for Angel Of Mercy to return to form this weekend.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup is exciting local Magic In Motion.
Steadily building to the task over five race starts this season, Magic In Motion overcame a disappointing run for 12th in the IPG Print Handicap (1200m) first-up with two mid-pack finishes over 1400 metres.
Unlucky to finish second to Elusive Storm in the Cyril Gilbert OAM (1400m) on April 26th, the Magic Albert mare will carry winning form into this weekend’s Lord Mayor’s Cup and strolling home to claim the Grinders Coffee Handicap (1350m) last time out on May 10th.
Finishing second to in-form runner Leebaz in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) last time out, trainer John O’Shea has nominated Wistful for a maiden appearance north of the border this weekend.
Arguably hitting career best form so far over her two most recent races, Wistful overcame less-than memorable runs in all of the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m), Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) and Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) with an impressive turn of foot to finish second in the well-contest Dunkirk Maiden (1600m) prior to the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.
Aiming to translate a strong showing in lead-up events into an appearance in the season-closing Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 21st, O’Shea is confident of another success run for the Tiger Hill mare in the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup.
Charging home to finish second in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) last time out, South Australian native Starkiato will make the long trip to Brisbane this week to line up for this weekend’s Lord Mayor’s Cup.
The winner of six races and claiming minor placings in a further five over a total of 27 appearances on track, the Starcraft gelding has proven experience in overcoming wide barrier draws and poor running position, and is a legitimate chance of causing an upset at Doomben this weekend.
A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
