Just 13 runners have been confirmed to line up for a tilt at the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) at Brisbane’s Doomben Racecourse this weekend, highlighted by several noted performers in 2014 so-far.
Steadily building to the task at hand this season, trainer John O’Shea has accepted a position in the final field of the Lord Mayor’s Cup for Wistful.
Unlucky not to claim a race win over five starts this season, Wistful has overcome disappointing results in each of her first three races at Group level with impressive performances for second in each of the Dunkirk 3.y.o (1600m) and Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) most recently.
Allocated the ideal barrier 4, the Tiger Hill mare will be partnered by talented jockey Kerrin McEvoy in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and is once more a great chance of success.
O’Shea will be offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup, having also accepted a position in the final field for Cameo.
Claiming four wins and two places from her 21 competitive starts to date, Cameo appeared to be lacking in each of her first three starts this preparation, but returned to great form when charging home to win the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) by more than a length last time out.
Allocated the inside barrier for this weekend’s Doomben appearance, the Shamardal mare has been confirmed to be partnered by veteran jockey Glen Boss and is a great chance of continuing to build in form in the Lord Mayor’s Cup.
While blocked for a run and eighth in the featured Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) last weekend, Angel Of Mercy’s experience in ‘big name’ events is likely to count for a lot in the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup.
Easily one of the most well-trialled competitors confirmed for the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup, Angel Of Mercy finished third amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) on April 5th and strolled home to win the Listed Winning Edge Members’ Quality (1600m) with ease most notably on April 19th.
Drawing the an ideal avenue via barrier 3, the Hussonet mare will only have to carry a race-low 57kgs and is a great chance of returning to the winner’s circle on Saturday.
Producing an impressive turn of foot to overcome poor running position and finish second in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes (1600m) last time out on May 10th, trainer Lloyd Kennewell has accepted a position for talented South Australian Starkiato in the final field of the 2014 Lord Mayor’s Cup.
The winner of six races and claiming minor position in a further five from a total of 27 competitive starts, Starkiato produced a particularly impressive 2013 spring preparation; claiming four victories which included the Gawler Cup (1500m) most notably.
Charged with leaving from the central barrier 7, Kennewell has been pleased with the way the Starcraft gelding both travelled to Brisbane and has taken to work since arriving, and is confident of heading into the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap (1600m) next-up in winning form.
