Strawberry Boy has returned to racing in competitive form this time and is a leading chance of returning the winner’s circle at Doomben on Saturday after being included in 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup nominations.

Posting seven wins and a further eight minors through 22 career starts so far, Strawberry Boy has found exceptional condition since transferring to the care of Chris Waller; winning the Listed Ladies’ Day Cup (1400m) before finishing third in each of the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) and Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) over a strong summer campaign.

Returning this time for fifth in the Royal Randwick 100 (1400m) and sixth in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m), the son of Redoute’s Choice is sure to relish the conditions of the 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup and will be very hard to be if allocated an ideal alley on Wednesday.

Talented local Hopfgarten boxed on for a commendable fifth in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight ago and should have no issue in stepping back to a mile for the 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup.

Securing nine wins and a further six minors through his 27 career starts so far, Hopfgarten also performed to a high standard over a summer campaign, highlighted by success in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m).

Returning to racing and the winner’s circle in the Canadian Club Handicap (1350m) on March 28th, the Mossman gelding ran second to Sir Moments in the Listed Tails Stakes (1630m) on April 11th; placing third in the Toowoomba Cup (2150m) on May 2nd in what was his only other start prior to the Doomben Cup.

Leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan is set to launch a two-pronged attack on the 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup after including Alma’s Fury and Gundy Spirit in nominations.

Unable to make an impact in two black type starts so far this time, Alma’s Fury is a proven Winter Carnival performer having won both the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) and Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) in 2014.

Gundy Spirit appears primed for another impressive performance in the Lord Mayor’s Cup having run third in the Listed P.M.’s Cup (1400m) and Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) most recently.

The 2015 Lord Mayor’s Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
